Utah Clean Air

Utah Clean Air

Many people are attracted to Utah, enjoying our beautiful and clean cities, excellent recreational opportunities, access to national parks and monuments, vibrant economy, and wonderful people. Key to continued enjoyment of our natural resources, a healthy tourism industry, and the health of our citizens is proper management of our environment. Salt Lake City and surrounding northern Utah areas are unfortunately subject to several low-quality air days each winter, where the inversion effect takes over, trapping unhealthy air in our cities. I believe it’s only a matter of time before the air quality in southern Utah also suffers from the effects of pollution. Low-quality air is not healthy for our citizens or the environment, and deters businesses from locating in Utah. The good news is that through legislation and the efforts of Utahns, our air quality is improving greatly and will continue to do so if we stay on this trajectory.

I’ve had the privilege of being one of the first organizing chairs of the bi-partisan Utah Legislature Clean Air Caucus.  Since that time, the Caucus has met regularly and the number of legislators from both parties who participate has grown dramatically. I have helped sponsor and support various measures intended to promote and protect clean air in our state.  This year I sponsored successful legislation that had nearly unanimous bi-partisan support to expand the electric vehicle charging station network in Utah. HB 396 creates a public-private partnership for Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure. Expanding this network statewide will allow more rural residents to access needed charging stations. It will also give electric car owners more flexibility for statewide travel, further improving our air quality. The addition of these electric charging stations represents a $50 million investment by Rocky Mountain Power, meaning that charging stations will be added at no cost to taxpayers.
